Sustainable built environments

Paving the way for achieving the targets of 2030 and beyond

Thessaloniki

22-24 March 2023

Welcoming message

Following the SBE16 and SBE19-Thessaloniki conferences, SBE23-Thessaloniki “Sustainable built environments: Paving the way for achieving the targets of 2030 and beyond” attempts to explore sustainability in the built environment as the means to achieve the targets for climate change mitigation and adaptation. The conference will address the three main pillars of sustainability: environment, economy and society, studied within the prism of our living space/habitat.

The previous experience of the organizers, as well as the favorable weather conditions, the city’s and the country’s hospitality and Thessaloniki’s historical background create the environment for another very successful and fruitful event.

The conference is organized by the Laboratory of Building Construction and Building Physics, Department of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and is part of the SBE21-23 Conference series.

The SBE21-23 Conference series

iiSBE focuses its efforts on issues related to Sustainable Built Environment (SBE) and as part of this mission iiSBE has been a leader in the development and management of an international SBE conference series since the year 2000. This work is carried out in partnership with four international organizations including:

  • International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB, cibworld.nl).
  • International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment (iiSBE, iisbe.org).
  • International Federation of Consulting Engineers, fidic.org.
  • United Nations Environment Programme, unenvironment.org.

The SBE series follows a three-year cycle, beginning with a review of the previous cycle results and requests for expressions of interest (EOIs) for events in the new cycle. Selected teams are invited to submit detailed proposals that are then reviewed by the SBE partnership in order to select a single World conference or a series of Regional events.

The series places a core emphasis on peer-reviewed papers and presentations of regional policy papers, displays of pre-evaluated projects and a small number of high-quality commercial exhibits. While papers and presentations in the regional SBE conferences may be bilingual, those in the global World SBE event are English.

Research-based organizations take financial and organizational responsibility for the individual regional events while the international series partners, iiSBE, CIB, FIDIC and UN Environment, provide organizational advice and use their networks to help ensure large and multi-disciplinary audiences.

Ten national/regional conferences took place in 2019 and the World SBE conference BEYOND2020 took place virtually in Gothenburg during 2-4 November 2020. The next World Sustainable Built Environment Conference (WSBE23) will take place in 2023 in Montréal, CA.

Key topics of the conference include -but are not limited to- the following subjects:

  • Impacts of climate change on the built environment: status and strategies for adaptation, mitigation and resilience.
  • Energy and environmental performance assessment of buildings and built areas.
  • Zero energy – emissions – lifecycle emission buildings.
  • Renovation and performance upgrading of buildings, urban areas and infrastructure.
  • Building physics supporting sustainable approaches at all scales of the built environment.
  • Innovation in materials, products and systems.
  • Integration of renewable energy at building and small urban area scales.
  • Evolutions of sustainable buildings and urban environments in a post COVID-19 era.
  • Artificial Intelligence for the development of sustainable buildings and urban environments.
  • Risk assessment and sustainable resilience of systems in the built environment.
  • Urban morphologies and microclimates.
  • Blue and green spaces.
  • Schemes and interactions for efficient management of energy, water, gray water and waste.
  • Smart cities.
  • Sustainable mobility.
  • Design support methods, tools and certification schemes.
  • Circular economy.
  • Policies, regulations and standards.
